The dsm 5 defines a panic attack as periods of intense fear or discomfort in which at least four of the following 13 symptoms develop quickly and peak within 10 minutes. The 13 symptoms include:
1. palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate,
2. sweating,
3. trembling or shaking,
4. sensations of shortness of breath or smothering,
5. feeling of choking or a lump in the throat
6. chest pain or discomfort,
7. nausea or abdominal distress,
8. feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint,
9. derealization or depersonalization,
10. fear of losing control or going crazy,
11. fear of dying,
12. numbness or tingling sensations,
13. chills or hot flushes.
Panic Disorder is defined as recurrent, unexpected panic attacks. Along with being concerned about them or changing any behaviors due to having panic attacks or worrying about possible implications of panic attacks. The worries might be things like “what if panic causes me to have a heart attack”, “what if my derealization symptoms make me go crazy or get even worse”.
Research suggests that panic attacks are often triggered by a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors including one’s level of anxiety sensitivity. Anxiety sensitivity is the degree to which someone misinterprets anxiety symptoms as dangerous.
To illustrate how panic disorder is developed, I share what happens in the panic cycle.
By examining the panic cycle, you have no control over your triggers. Life happens and you never want to try to avoid your triggers.
You have no control over your initial sensations, that’s your first fear, that’s automatic.
You do have control over how you judge or interpret those sensations. You can change that “oh no!” To “oh well”. You can stop catastrophizing and begin to allow and welcome the anxiety sensations to be there.
And you have control over your safety and avoidance behaviors as well.
But let’s talk about these anxiety sensations or symptoms. Most of these symptoms are uncomfortable and some of them are even painful. But there is a big difference between being uncomfortable and being harmful or dangerous. Nothing about a panic attack is harmful and none of the symptoms are dangerous.
I have a pdf that goes into detail about what happens in your body when you feel those anxiety sensations. I will leave the link for you in the description below. It really helps to understand the physiology of anxiety symptoms.
For people that suffer with conditions like panic disorder, agoraphobia, health anxiety, OCD, and other anxiety disorders score high in a trait called anxiety sensitivity. Anxiety sensitivity is the real culprit in panic disorder. It means that you tend to interpret anxiety sensations as dangerous when they are not.
