Wind display which presents the feelings of wind has been developed for the purpose of improving the presence of virtual reality. Most of the existing wind displays express various wind by blowing actual airflow. However, they require lots of wind sources to reproduce the wind directions.
The main contribution of this study is proposing a method to manipulate the perception of wind direction in order to construct the wind display with fewer wind sources. We presented three-dimensional (3D) sound of wind with the wind, finding that the perceived wind direction was close to the presented direction by the sound instead of the actual wWind direction. The perceived wind direction changed by a maximum of 67.12°.
It is considered to be due to the wind perception is rewritten by the cross-modal presentation of the wind and the realistic 3D sound. Our result shows that wind perception can be manipulated by multisensory stimuli.
