Just after 1 a.m. on Sunday, North Little Rock police officers conducted a traffic stop at 52nd and Camp Robinson Road on a vehicle that was occupied by three individuals.
During the course of the traffic stop, one of the subjects was being patted down for officer safety when a gun was observed on the suspect. Police claim that a struggle then ensued between officers and the suspect. During the struggle, the suspect allegedly fired at least one shot at the officers which resulted in the officers firing shots at the suspect.
The suspect, 17-year-old Charles Smith J.r, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers did attempt life-saving measures. Police say the suspect's handgun was recovered at the scene.
The officers involved in this incident have been placed on paid administrative leave.
