i24NEWS DESK | Amid a nearly empty chamber, President Reuven Rivlin began swearing in new members of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) in groups of three as the coronavirus epidemic continues to grip the county.
Rivlin, who was joined in the Knesset chamber by incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Blue & White party leader Benny Gantz and Speaker of the Knesset Yuli Edelstein, implored the political leaders to form a government as quickly as possible.
“We are looking forward to the day-to-day, the routine when we will all return to what we have in common, our shared fate that is expressed so clearly in the current crisis,” Rivlin said from the Knesset plenum.
During his speech, Rivlin reminded Israel's top politicians that the country was in the midst of an unprecedented challenge, and needed responsible leadership.
“Politics is far from perfect. But politics is meant to be the art of the possible. Often, politics needs to be the art of compromise… At the heart of democracy lies the understanding that what often creates the requirement for compromise, to make deep and painful concessions, is the will of the people itself,” he added.
Earlier Monday, Rivlin handed over the task of forming a coalition government to Gantz after the former IDF chief-of-staff received the supposed endorsement of 61 elected parliamentarians - enough to attempt to form a ruling coalition in the 120-seat chamber - over the weekend.
The development is a huge blow to Netanyahu, who is currently facing three corruption charges for fraud, bribery, and breach of trust; allegations he flatly denies.
