During the last bean harvest at ÖBZ, many bean seeds were infected by the bean weevil. Female beetles lay their eggs on the bean pods or seeds. The larvae then eat the bean seeds from the inside and adults emerge. Right after harvest, freeze the dry seeds for several days to protect them from being damaged.

The ÖBZ Team is a volunteer group within the community garden project at the Ecological Education Center (ÖBZ) in Munich. They collect varieties of beans that are no longer in commercial use, and aim to spread the use of old bean varieties and raise awareness of the importance of seed autonomy. They now have over 200 varieties.
