Expert dietitian explains what liquid diets are and if they are good or bad.
One moment we’re told to keep our fat intake low, the next, try keto. We’re told to avoid juices, the next, we’re told to do a juice cleanse. We’re told not to drink our calories, the next, we’re told to only consume our calories through liquids. Elle Kelly a registered sports dietitian explains why eating food is crucial to our diet and why liquid diets can cause more harm than good, especially on weight loss.
Nutrition is very context-dependent, when it comes to a liquid diet, Elle thinks it's extremely important to talk about how the cons outweigh any potential benefits and would strongly advise you to avoid them unless you have been advised by your medical professional as liquid diets can be prescribed for medical reasons such as before or after certain types of surgery.
There are many different kinds of liquid diets but they all carry the same ethos, which is to only consume nutrition through liquids. Liquid diets can consist of fruit and vegetable juices or may be based on meal-replacement shakes or soups and smoothies.
