Recently, millions of migratory birds have reached their rest stop and breeding grounds in the Yellow River Delta, east China's Shandong Province. To better observe and protect these birds, artificial intelligence-enabled image recognition systems have been deployed to the area.

The monitoring devices first take photos of the birds, then AI algorithms identify the distinguishing features between species. With the gradual increase in sample data, identification accuracy has topped 90 percent. Surveying birds has traditionally depended on time-consuming purely manual techniques that produce much lower efficiency and accuracy.

The Yellow River Delta boasts the largest and most complete wetland ecosystem in China's warm temperate zone. It is an important wintering and breeding ground for birds traveling along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway and the West Pacific Flyway, among the nine migratory routes in the world.
