Water Beetle fly pattern.
For this demo I used a Mustad 3906B nympth hook. For this fly I look for a hook that has thick wire and wide gap. As part of the tying process I add UV glue to the base of the legs as this increases durability. After curing with UV light I like to place the fly in direct sunlight to completely cure. If tacky after curing I add a coat of clear “Hard as Nails” nail polish to the body. This pattern has proven productive in the right conditions and has saved me from a few fishless days in autumn. I fish this fly with floating, sink tip, and slow sinking lines using a short strips to animate the legs. I have experimented tying this fly more realistically; but this didn’t seem to improve the flies success.
