US President Bill Clinton issued a strong appeal Thursday (9/5) to Greece and Turkey to settle their disputes in the Aegean peacefully as he welcomed Greek President Constantinos Stephanopoulos to Washington. But Clinton's appeal prompted a sharp response from the Greek leader who blamed Turkey for the tensions over territorial claims. Clinton also had words of praise for Greece when he and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton greeted Stephanopoulos at the White House with full state fanfare.
