The New Pamban Bridge, a groundbreaking 2,070-meter-long vertical lift sea bridge in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, is now ready to welcome passenger trains, following clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to inaugurate the bridge, marking a significant milestone in India's infrastructure development.
This bridge, which is being constructed parallel to the existing Pamban Bridge, will be India’s first-ever vertical lift sea bridge. It is designed to span the Bay of Bengal with 100 spans, including 99 spans of 18.3 meters each and a special 72.5-meter lift span to accommodate marine traffic. The project is estimated to cost ₹580 crore and is part of a major upgrade to the region’s railway network.
The New Pamban Bridge will not only serve passenger trains but will also enhance safety and efficiency, providing a much-needed modern alternative to the aging Pamban Rail Bridge, which has been in service since 1914.
