Leonard is a gifted but deeply disturbed sculptor. He has a deep
religious fervor and a history of psychotic behavior. After escaping
from an institution he meets a priest on a train who has been banished
to be the new pastor to a small town. He befriends him then assumes
his identity. The small town awaits their new priest, unaware of the
events surrounding his arrival. Once there he begins sculpting an
intricate chess set of some of the townspeople and fancies himself the
chess master of their deepest confessions, playing their sins against
each other. The result for the town is disastrous. Under his reign of
divine madness, they watch their old way of life disappear into chaos.
As the "game" spins out of control, detectives close in on the chess
master Leonard, whose delusions grow with each move. The ensemble
cast falls into a tangled web of what is real and what is not from
Leonard's delusional mind of religion, murder and ordained sense of
fate. In true Hitchcock style, the ending will have you questioning
everything you thought you knew about Leonard.
