Giant panda Liang Liang gave birth to a cub on Tuesday at the Giant Panda Conservation Center in Malaysia.
Liang Liang, who is on loan to Malaysia from China, gave birth to a 175-gram female cub at 13:45. She held onto her baby so tightly that veterinary experts and staff at the center did not have a chance to cut her umbilical cord until 18:00.
Both Liang Liang and her baby are in good condition, according to veterinary experts.
"When the first news I got it that we have the baby, we were very excited, very happy and even we couldn't believe it," said Rosly Rahmat Ahmat Lana, deputy president of Zoo Negara, Liang Liang's home in Malaysia.
China loaned Liang Liang and giant panda Xing Xing to Malaysia last May to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The two giant pandas mated this May. However, as there were no visible signs of the pregnancy, veterinary experts did not discover it until they detected a change in Liang Liang's behavior on Aug 7. Just over one week later, Liang Liang gave birth to her cub.
Liang Liang and Xing Xing are the first pair of pandas to have a baby after living abroad for just one year. They make Malaysia the third country after the United States and Austria to have a cub through natural mating.
"I received a lot of emails and congratulations from China, and all over Asia and the world also, because we are the fastest (to) produce the normal breeding of pandas in the world," said Rosly Rahmat Ahmat Lana.
The baby giant panda has brought the country much joy. Even Prime Minister Najib Razak, tweeted about the birth.
Liang Liang and her baby will be isolated from tourists for two months, during which time the baby panda's name will be chosen.
