Packaging:
Comes in a cardboard box, inside is a fairly simple metal palette, similar to my daily driver palette, the only distinctive thing is the Mungyo branding on the outside.
Inside:
48 individually wrapped half pans- paper belly band with a plastic wrapper.
Colors Inside- See Full shownotes, linked above
Copper has an unusual surface texture, and definitely looks like it will be a bit gritty- all the metallics have this weird texture. Most of the other paints are at least semi-opaque, if not opaque, and most have a strange gritty texture as well. All seem to be extruded paints.
Swatch Test:
So these really glob up onto your brush, and when I blend them out with water, there’s a lot of blowback (but to be fair, I’m trying to do a lot of wash in a small space). It seems like these are full of optical brighteners (muddy up the water fast, high opacity, glob up on the brush, not a lot of granulation).
Lift Test:
Some colors are possibly a bit more staining than others, but they all seem to be the same amount of staining, but also seem very prone to reactivation, especially the thicker applications. Pigment control is going to be really important when using these paints.
Mixing
Atomic Mixing:
Some colors mix and create clean secondaries (warm yellow+ warm red, cool yellow+cool red for oranges, same for the yellow+blue mixes for greens), some are much more of a struggle (getting decent purples takes some guesswork and trial and error), but you have a fair number of colors at your disposal, and through trial and error can figure out how to mix most secondary colors.
Optical Mixing:
A lot of reactivation with the two yellows, but other than that, these do seem to glaze and form secondary colors. These’ll be tricky- there are a few issues I’m really concerned with that I’ll only know for certain about during the fieldtest.
Wet into Wet Test:
Good color dispersion wet into wet. Decent pigment movement, capable of nice, diffused wet into wet techniques and misty, atmospheric backgrounds. Maybe not as saturated as I would hope. Granulation is a bit more apparent in the wet into wet test, especially with Ultramarine Blue
Colors dry a bit pastel and desaturated- while that is normal, I think color and paint control are a challenge with these paints.
Pros:
The pricepoint is great- if you were considering any of Jane Davenport or the Prima Marketing watercolor palettes- this is the source, just buy this.
Cons:
These are grainy and a bit course.
Color control using another palette or mixing surface is key to making these paints work for you.
Your average artist can’t really buy the Mungyo Half pans openstock
Have a lot of optical brighteners, so will get used up fast
Verdict:
I have some serious concerns about this palette, but only a fieldtest will allow me to give a fair and accurate verdict. I don’t dislike it, but I don’t love it.
