In this free firearms training video Tim Schmidt, President and Founder of the USCCA, and Michael Martin, chief firearms instructor for the USCCA, discuss the stopping power of a firearm's caliber. Michael discusses why the traditional way of calculating kinetic energy (Kinetic Energy = 1/2MV²) isn't necessarily the best way to calculate stopping power.
Instead Michael and Tim suggest that you calculate the stopping power of a bullet using the Taylor Knockout Factor (TKOF) which is MVD/7,000. The TKOF was developed by John "Pondoro" Taylor, a famous mid-20th century hunter and poacher of African big game. If the international standard units of grams, millimeters, and meters per second are substituted, the divisor can be changed from 7000 to 3500 to give approximately the same resulting TKOF.
Taylor first described this measure of stopping power in his classic work "African Rifles and Cartridges". In this work, Taylor did not actually state the equation. In fact, he stated in Reference 1 that "I do not think there is any necessity to go into the methods I employed to arrive at the formula I used, suffice it to say that the final figures agree in an altogether remarkable way with the actual performance of the rifles under practical hunting conditions." However, it is obvious from the text and his presentation that he used the equation.
One of the main reasons that Michael and Tim don't like the Kinetic energy formula is because it neglects the geometric configuration of the projectile, which is why they advise using the TKOF. Bottom line though is pick the right ammunition for you, and ammunition that you'll be able to afford to practice with. What do you use for your carry ammunition? Let us know in the comments below.
