(4 Feb 2019) Venezuela Foreign Minister on Monday rejected an ultimatum by European nations calling for new presidential elections, and said he hopes they will rethink their stance of recognizing opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president.
"I hope Europe thinks it over," Venezuelan foreign minister Jorge Arreaza said during an event in Caracas. "President (Nicolas) Maduro and his peace diplomacy team have done everything possible and more so Europe can listen, so Europe doesn't look so bad in history."
Arreaza also lashed out against the United States and European nations that have expressed their support for Guaido.
"The only recognition we care about is the recognition of the Venezuelan people," he said.
At least 12 EU countries have recognized Guaido as interim president, and rejected the legitimacy of Maduro.
