The ATACMS system, made by the American company Lockheed Martin, is a long-range guided missile that fires about 300 or more small bombs and can carry a 375-pound warhead.
The missiles are equipped with a GPS system and have a maximum range of 300 kilometers, although the weapons supplied to Ukraine have a shorter range and carry cluster munitions.
The missiles fly much farther and higher than artillery missiles and descend toward their target at high speed due to the force of gravity, according to the New York Times.
When launched, the clusters open in the air and release hundreds of small bombs instead of a single warhead.
The ATACMS missile was developed in the 1980s to destroy Soviet targets, as it began as a "guided weapon" with the United States relying mainly on "dumb bombs" and other unguided munitions.
The Pentagon has two versions of ATACMS, one with a single explosive charge and the other with cluster bombs, which are weapons that open in the air and release a large number of small munitions or bombs that spread over a wide area with the aim of destroying multiple targets at once.
The US military previously used them during Operation Desert Storm (the Second Gulf War) by launching about 30 anti-aircraft ballistic missiles, according to government records. The missiles were also used to hit medium-range ballistic missile launchers and Iraqi surface-to-air missile sites, according to the New York Times.
The US military also launched more than 400 tactical missiles carrying small bombs during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, according to government records.
The Pentagon previously restricted the use of cluster bombs because they spread dangerous unexploded bombs that kill and injure soldiers and civilians after the battles ended.
