A common question I get is, what is the difference between LASIK and PRK? Both use laser to correct your eyesight, and both allow you to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses, but there are a few notable
differences you should be aware of.
With PRK, a laser is applied on the surface of your eye, whereas with LASIK, a flap is created first, and then a second laser is applied under a
flap. The laser used in PRK and the 2nd laser in LASIK are exactly
the same laser. Both surgeries take about 5-10 minutes.
While PRK is safe and accurate, the healing phase is associated with discomfort for about 4-5 days after surgery, and the vision takes a few weeks to clear up. With LASIK, on the other other, the vision clears much faster and the healing is relatively painless. That’s why more people choose LASIK.
When do we choose PRK instead of LASIK? Not everyone is a candidate for LASIK. PRK alters the cornea less, and therefore it may be the safer option for some patients.
In addition to LASIK and PRK, we also perform SMILE, refractive lens exchange (RLE), and cataract surgery.
In SMILE, the laser creates a small frisbee shaped disc in your cornea, and it’s removed to leave your cornea with a slimmer shape. It’s like liposuction for your cornea, but with laser precision.
Refractive lens exchange involves replacing your natural lens with an artificial lens implant that has your prescription in it.
Cataract surgery also involves replacing your natural lens, which has become cloudy, with an artificial lens implant containing your prescription.
If you’d like to know if you are a good candidate for laser vision correction or lens replacement surgery, schedule an appointment at our Mission Viejo
location. We look forward to helping you.
