FBI Special Agent Tom Simon said: "When anybody is presented with an investment opportunity that offers high returns like 5% a month should hold onto their wallets and purses and run the other way theres no such thing in the real world,"
A Maui woman plead guilty in front of a federal grand jury to operating a ponzi scheme that victimized six Hawaii families.
Jedidah Duarosan admitted to pocketing $882,000 dollars over a period of six months, to pay off some of her debts and make a down payment on some land in Maui.
She promised the families risk-free returns of five percent a month funded by investments in oil, gold, and real estate.
Some of the families are now at risk of foreclosure or losing their homes on Maui.
Duarosan faces a maximum of ten years in prison and a $250,000 dollar fine.
