Hello. My name is Alex Valenti and I'm a transportation project engineer in the New York City Dewberry office. I'm here to talk about highway capacity. The term highway capacity is used to express the maximum hourly rate at which persons or vehicles can reasonably be expected to transverse a point during a given time period under prevailing roadway or traffic conditions. Highway capacity analysis generally serves three purposes; they are transportation planning studies, traffic operational analysis, and highway design.
For highway design, the knowledge of highway capacity is essential to properly fit a planned highway to traffic demands. Highway capacity analysis is used to select highway types and to determine dimensions for things such as number of lanes and minimum lengths for weaving sections. To determine the capacity for a particular highway, the designer should refer to the highway capacity manual for guidance. The highway capacity manual characterizes operating conditions of a facility in terms of traffic performance measures related to speed, travel time, freedom to maneuver, traffic interruptions, comfort, and convenience. The level of service ranges from level service A, which is least congested, to level service F, which is most congested.
