Embattled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is likely to resign as the Liberal Party leader on Monday amid growing calls within the party to step aside, The Globe and Mail reported, citing sources. It is unclear whether Trudeau will resign immediately or stay on as prime minister until a new leader is selected.
The development comes as polls show that Trudeau's Liberals will lose badly to the opposition Conservatives in the upcoming federal election slated to be held in October this year. It also comes less than a month after Chrystia Freeland quit as the country's finance minister and deputy prime minister over Trudeau's policies.
