Entanglement entropy of quantum fields is a topic of growing importance in several fields such as quantum gravity, condensed matter physics, and quantum information. This entropy of entanglement is conventionally computed, using a number of different techniques, relative to subregions of spatial Cauchy hypersurfaces. In this talk I will review an alternative formulation of entanglement entropy for Gaussian theories in terms of the spacetime two-point correlation function. This definition is explicitly spacetime in nature and is free of some of the possible non-covariance issues faced by the conventional spatial formulations. I will also discuss recent extensions of this entropy definition to non-Gaussian and interacting theories.
