While we were in Chiang Mai, we visited Baan Tong Luang Village which is a modeled village that showcases the different hill tribe groups of northern Thailand. It includes the: Karen, Hmong, Mien/Yao, Lahu, Lisu, and the Kayan Long Neck.
The village has traditional houses. In front of each one are stalls where villagers sell their handicrafts and souvenirs. The sale of these handicrafts is an important source of income for them so tourists are welcome. While you are there you also have a chance to see the villagers at work making many of their crafts.
Baan Tong Luang isn't a real village, but it wants to show tourists the ways of life of these communities. Kayan Long Neck is one of the main attractions here. The Kayan Long Neck are refugees in Thailand, who have fled conflict in their native country of Myanmar.
There is a belief that the Longneck women wore rings to protect themselves from tigers in the jungle. A more accurate reason for wearing the rings is that they consider it a form of beauty and it gives a sense of cultural identity. Whatever the reason is, it is fascinating to see. We spent a few hours walking around and interacting with them.
Many criticize this sort of tourist display, however, we were grateful to have a chance to learn a bit more about these tribes and their lifestyle but most of all have an interaction with them!
