My at home speech therapy plan for families of young children with Apraxia is always twofold.
First, establish a communication system. For many families, this is most easily done through sign language. If your child is a little bit older, like in preschool, you may find it easier to use a tablet with a communication app.
Whatever the method, I want your child to be able to approach you and tell you what they want. You might be able to get by just guessing what your child wants and having them shake their head yes or no. But giving them the tools to communicate and express themselves specifically empowers them and gives them independence. Your child will be much less frustrated if they can sign fish, cracker, or select a goldfish icon on a tablet to ask for their snack, rather than having to wait for you to guess what they might want. This is key to fostering normal language development while your child's speech skills play catch up.
If your child doesn't talk, the second practice I want you to advocate is to encourage them to imitate any sounds at all.
For hesitant talkers, I have the most success using sound effects or exclamations. They might try to imitate my intonation for uh-oh when I drop something, or copy me making a humming sound while they push a toy truck. If it is done in a fun and low pressure way, children will be more likely to make the sounds. If I tell a child, "Say uh-oh," they will almost never do it, but if I keep accidentally knocking something off the table while saying uh-oh and give them time to respond, maybe on the tenth time the child will hum, "Uh-oh," without me saying anything. I encourage families to set up silly and fun situations where the child can imitate sound effects to encourage them to talk.
Your SLP will guide you about what specific words and sounds you should be working on at home.
** Keep in mind - At home practice for treatment of apraxia should not be done without the support and guidance of a speech therapist **
