세계 식량의 날: 식량 불안 증가 속 IFAD의 역할과 한국과의 협력 중요성
Welcome to Within The Frame where we delve into the most up-to-date issues across the globe.
I'm Kim Mok-yeon.
Today marks World Food Day, a day designated to promote awareness and action in support of the millions of people worldwide who suffer from hunger and malnutrition.
Though notable populations in many countries are suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol partly due to hyper-nutrition, many people from the other side of the world are still suffering from hunger and starvation.
About 10 percent of the global population is experiencing famine, which means about 800 million people are starving.
And with worsening climate change and ongoing conflicts across the globe, the situation seems to be getting worse.
In light of the occasion, we will take a closer look at the current food crisis and speak to an expert about possible solutions to tackle the situation.
For this, we are joined by the president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development of the United Nations, Alvaro Lario in the studio with us.
Many thanks for your presence, Mr. Lario.
1. First, could you explain for our viewers what the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is, as well as its role?
2. We hear that this is your first visit to South Korea. What are the reasons behind your visit?
3. There are growing concerns about the global food crisis becoming a long-term problem.
Before we delve into the causes, tell us, how severe is the situation regarding food insecurity around the world?
4. There have been several crises in the past few years – like the Ukraine war, the pandemic and climate change, which have affected food security across the world. How can we address this?
5. South Korea is a founding member of IFAD. How is South Korea currently supporting IFAD’s initiatives? Can you elaborate on the partnership between IFAD and South Korea?
6. How important is cooperation with Korea for IFAD? And in which areas could we cooperate further?
7. In addition to ODA, South Korea is promoting agricultural technology in Africa through initiatives such as the K-Rice Belt project.
How do you assess Korea’s efforts towards achieving food security and sustainable agriculture?
8. At COP28 last year in Dubai, a commitment was made to mobilize $2.5 billion to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and protect the livelihoods of farmers threatened by climate change. Do you consider this to be enough? What efforts would be necessary to ensure that funds are used where they are most needed?
9. What efforts has IFAD made to address food crises and alleviate rural poverty in developing countries? Could you also name some accomplishments that have been achieved so far?
10. What message would you like to convey to governments and stakeholders about the urgency of addressing global food security issues?
Alright, we'll have to conclude our discussion here Mr. Lario, thank you so much for your time and your insights to this very important topic. We look forward to your continuous efforts to stabilize food crisis around the world.
Now that wraps up our program for tonight, thank you so much for joining us.
We'll be back tomorrow at 8:30PM Korea time. Until then, good bye.
