Mobile deposit or remote deposit is a convenient way to skip a visit to your bank.
What if you deposit the check once and then forget and deposit it again?
When you deposit the same check twice - it is called “Accidental double presentment”.
If you will do it in the same bank - most probably it will be caught automatically and your second deposit will be rejected.
If you will manage to submit the double deposit - one of the deposits should bounce back.
But what if you deposit the same check at one bank and then deposit it at another?
It will lead to a race condition and one bank will clear the money and the second bank will be rejected.
Even if you manage to deposit the check a second time - banks will resolve this issue and money will be deducted from your account.
I wouldn’t recommend trying this, because intentional double presentment is a fraud.
There are three possible scenarios:
Bank will contact you and will ask you to be careful and not do this again.
Your bank account will be closed with a mark in ChexSystems. It will mean that you cannot open a bank account in major banks. You will have to use prepaid cards or second chance banks like Chime Bank of Simple Bank.
Your bank or issuer of the check will file a fraud lawsuit against you. Consequences will depend on the state where you live and amount of the deposit.
Check my review of Chime Bank, or Simple Bank or some prepaid card.
