A Music History lecture for the University of Fort Hare in East London, South Africa. Our second years continue the theme of nationalism in Romantic music. In this lecture, we see how Dvorak followed in Smetana's footsteps in the quest to forge a national Bohemian style of music. We learn how Dvorak applied this same principle to his establishment of an American idiom of music forged from the musical elements native to this country. We observe how his New World Symphony embodies this quest for a uniquely American style.
