Marine Lines is an upmarket seaside stretch along the popular Marine Drive Road, also known as Queen’s Necklace. The name Marine Lines comes from the Marine Battalion Lines, a British military base established in the 19th century.
The locality is well connected to several employment hubs as Mumbai’s majority population travels to South Mumbai for employment. While the popular ones are mainly in Fort and Churchgate areas, there are many small office spaces in the vicinity as well.
Bombay Stock Exchange, World Trade Centre, and Maker Chambers are all accessible within 5km. Further, there are many corporate offices around Flora Fountain and Horniman Circle Kala Ghoda, which is within 3 km from the locality.

There are no malls in and around the locality, but popular retail outlets, avenues for street shopping and the city’s famous markets are all situated within or in close proximity. Fashion Street, Crawford Market and Bhuleshwar Market are 10 mins drive away from Marine Lines. The same is the case with Colaba Causeway, which is merely 15 mins away.
The Mumbadevi temple, which lends its name to the city of Mumbai, is also nearby, and if one is coming from the western railway line, then Marine Lines is an ideal station to get off to visit this temple.
The locality also has Taraporevala Aquarium, where various fish species are on display. Many popular gymkhanas such as Police Gymkhana, Islam Gymkhana, Parsi Gymkhana and Hindu Gymkhana are present here.
Marine Drive promenade is an ideal hang out destination to watch beautiful sunsets. Other tourist attractions such as Gateway of India, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Horniman Circle Garden, Flora Fountain, and Girgaum Chowpatty are all nearby and can be easily accessed.
Maharshi Karve Rd, Shamaldas Gandhi Marg, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Rd, also known as Marine Drive Road and Marine Lines flyover, are the major approach roads for Marine Lines.
BEST buses run in good frequency. Taxis and aggregator cabs are readily available too. Marine Lines Railway Station is within the locality, while CSMT and Churchgate are the other two railway stations nearby.
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is located at 26.5 km. The under-construction coastal road project connecting South Mumbai to Bandra-Worli Sea Link will start from Marine Lines, which will further improve the locality’s connectivity quotient.
