America's Public Forum: Socialism, Populism, and Nationalism Since the 1990s
January 19th, 2022
MC'd by Luke Nathan Phillips
ft. John B. Judis and Michael Lind
From a series of events bridging the worlds of ideas and depolarization, hosted by Braver Angels and friends, "America's Public Forum."
About this event
Twenty-seven years ago, John B. Judis and Michael Lind published their policy manifesto, “For a New Nationalism,” at The New Republic magazine. Sharply critical of the directions the Bush and Clinton administrations had taken the America after the Cold War, they argued for economic nationalism and compromise in the culture wars. In the decades since, and especially in the age of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, Lind has been an indispensable interpreter of nationalist and populist ideas and policy debates, while Judis has been an essential chronicler of these movements and especially of new directions among American socialists.
Join us for this special America’s Public Forum event for a quarter-century retrospective on their essay, to hear their thoughts on what they got right and wrong, and how they assess current shifts in American ideology and policy thinking among socialists, populists, nationalists, and everybody else.
This event is free and open to all, and a recording will be available on the Braver Angels YouTube channel a few days afterwards. Luke Nathan Phillips will serve as MC.
