Moonchild Records had a great year in 2014. Although the label only had two releases they were both highly memorable. The warped, melodic brilliance of 'Strange' by Juan Deminicis in particular really stood out. Their first release of 2015 is here and it features the label owners back in the production spotlight. Javier Portilla and Sotela have been regular studio partners for the last two years. In addition to their 'Scallywag' single from 2013 the Costa Rican duo have remixed Facundo Mohrr and Marcelo Vasami. Here we see them with a brand new original production entitled 'Your Eyes' which features vocals from Emalaine.
I first heard about 'Your Eyes' quite some time ago. King Unique mentioned it to me when he returned home from a gig in Costa Rica. It was as I remember played right before he went on and it's beauty really struck a chord with the UK producer. Fast forward six plus months and the track is not only seeing it's release but with a remix from King Unique himself.
The original mix comes with a sizable presence; backed by a romping house groove it's feel good energy is undeniable; even in its relatively stripped down state early on. The wonky bass tones which lay down the foundation are incredibly funky and the subtle modular shifts keep it fresh throughout. Emalaine's vocals make their first appearance during the first breakdown and it's a quite a poignant moment. Uniquely striking with a spellbinding emotion they become immediately captivating and the surrounding musicality is just wonderful. For most, vocal tracks are a very subjective thing and that's why when one like this hits home it's extra special. beautiful stuff from Javier and Sotela.
The first interpretation of 'Your Eyes' is provided by Matt Thomas aka King Unique who is making his first appearance on Moonchild Records. The storied UK producer had one of the best years on record in 2014. Following a resurgence of sorts which began in late 2013 King Unique delivered the Beatport #1 'Some Break The Shell EP' in April and followed that up with two incredible remixes for Bedrock; the latter of which an Xpander-esque take on Guy J's 'Candyland' which dominated the Beatport techno charts all through the Christmas season. For his 'Your Eyes' interpretation King Unique has added his elusive sonic touch and the results are absolutely spectacular. Uniquely layered vocals, soulful guitar hooks and a more subterranean take on the groove result in one of this year's true gems. The lead up to the main break is the highpoint and surely destined for many goose bump moments on a dance floor near you. Don't miss this.
The second and final interpretation of 'Your Eyes' is provided by Juan Deminicis and Pablo Acenso. The Argentinean duo have collaborated before on 'Downshifting' which was released through Proton Music in May of 2013; and there are more beauties on the way this year with 'Smells Like Winter' dropping soon on Seven Villas Records. For their 'Your Eyes' interpretation Juan and Pablo have taken the joyous original into deeper, dreamier territory. The strong elements from the original are well conveyed here. A slightly more submerged take on the bass line sounds fabulous and Emalaine's vocals have been chopped and teased with an effortless flair over the framework. The shimmering atmospheric overlay which expertly shifts through emotions is the element which pulls it all together for me though. It's subtle emotion is very powerful and the wispy vocal trails get lost in it wonderfully. Great stuff from Juan and Pablo which rounds out a top notch release from Moonchild Records. Highly Recommended.
