Disney's plans for the future of the Alien franchise may mean the end of David's story, as Scott's planned third prequel film is unlikely to happen.
Fargo creator Noah Hawley has made it clear that the Alien TV show he’s making for Disney won’t continue the most interesting character arc from Ridley Scott’s prequel movies. Alien is one of the lucrative properties that Disney acquired in its absorption of 21st Century Fox, and the Mouse House is eager to cash in on the franchise. Fede Álvarez is directing the standalone movie Alien: Romulus, set between Alien and Aliens, and Hawley is working on the Alien TV series for FX.
The Alien TV series is a prequel to the movies set three decades before the original film. Scott already started exploring the backstory of the Alien universe in his prequel movies Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. But Hawley has said that he’s not interested in continuing the prequel storylines that Scott established in those movies, and will instead create his own backstory for the franchise. This is bad news for the most fascinating character from the prequel films, because it means his arc won’t be completed.
Noah Hawley's Alien TV Show Plans Are Bad News For David
Hawley’s comments on his Alien TV show have explicitly confirmed that he has no interest in carrying on the notion that David is the creator of the xenomorphs. Michael Fassbender gave a chilling performance as David and forged a compelling path for his character arc across both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. David is an android who joins the human space crew on their mission to meet their creators, the Engineers, and along the way, he becomes obsessed with creating life of his own.
The introduction of a friendly A.I. who looks just like David, Walter, built to Alien: Covenant’s terrifying twist ending in which David, posing as Walter, trapped the survivors in stasis before placing a couple of facehugger embryos in cold storage with the human embryos. This twist set up the endgame of David’s nefarious plans, but Hawley doesn’t want to pick up that plot thread in his Alien TV series. Not only will this diminish David’s role in the franchise’s history, but it also makes it unlikely that his arc will get a proper ending.
Alien's Future Could Mean The End Of David's Story
Disney’s plans for the future of the Alien franchise could mean the end of David’s story. Scott was initially planning to complete his Alien prequel trilogy with a third film resolving the mysteries of Alien: Covenant, but that project seems dead in the water after the Disney merger. If Hawley is coming up with his own backstory for the xenomorphs in his Alien TV show, then he might retcon a lot of the events of Prometheus and Alien: Covenant – primarily David’s role in the aliens’ creation.
