(24 Dec 2020) British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday said the UK would be an "ally" to the EU, following the confirmation that a Brexit deal had been reached between the two powers.
Speaking in a news conference at Downing Street after finalising the deal, Johnson said the deal had ensured the UK had "taken back control" of its regulations, borders and laws.
"We are outside the customs union and outside the single market. British laws will be made solely by the British Parliament, interpreted by UK judge judges sitting in UK courts and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice will come to an end", he said.
The deal, reached after nine tough months of negotiations, would ensure Britain and the 27-nation bloc can continue to trade in goods without tariffs or quotas after the U.K. breaks fully free of the EU on New Year’s Day.
It was billed by the Prime Minister as the "biggest trade deal yet, worth 660 billion pounds ($893 billion)".
Johnson said it was "A deal that will protect jobs across this country a deal that'll allow goods, UK goods and components to be sold without tariffs and without quotas in the market, a deal which will eventually allow our companies and our exporters to do even more business with our European friends."
