STORYLINE
Police in the Karachi fired tear gas to break up a small group of protesters on Friday evening.
AP Television pictures showed a few dozen protesters throwing stones at police vehicles.
The Karachi protest was one of several held nationwide on Friday, calling for an end to Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf's emergency rule.
Musharraf imposed emergency rule on November 3, sparking daily protests from lawyers, opposition political activists and some civil liberties groups.
Musharraf insists he declared the emergency to prevent judicial interference and the rising threat from militants linked to the Taliban and al-Qaida from derailing parliamentary elections due by early January.
But Musharraf's emergency faces stiff criticism from many countries including the United States, his key international backer, that the ballot cannot be fair unless restrictions on the opposition and the media are lifted.
Friday's protests come as a senior US envoy arrived in Pakistan to urge Musharraf to lift the state of emergency that has cast his country into political crisis.
US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte landed in the capital, Islamabad, late on Friday afternoon, according to a US Embassy spokesperson.
Details of Negroponte's schedule were not immediately available.
