Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko addressed a crowd of a few thousand supporters in Minsk, after a week of sizeable opposition protests.
"I didn't call for you to defend me," he told the crowds gathered outside the capital's main government building. "You came here to defend your country."
At the same time, a pro-opposition rival demonstration took place at Victory Park.
