The selection for Poland's entry in the 2024 Venice Biennale stirred political controversy, as artist Ignacy Czwartos accused the new government of censorship. Czwartos, chosen under the previous right-wing government, saw his project "Polish Practice in Tragedy. Between Germany and Russia" cancelled by the new centrist coalition led by Donald Tusk. The project, which intended to explore Poland's tragic 20th-century history and its current relevance, particularly in relation to Russia's aggression in Ukraine, was perceived by some critics as aligning too closely with the previous government's ideology. Following the change in administration, the Polish Ministry of Culture, now headed by Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, opted for "Repeat after Me" by Open Group, replacing Czwartos's exhibit without clear justification. This move led Czwartos to decry it as censorship, contrasting sharply with Poland's representation in the 2022 Biennale, which was commended for its openness and diversity.
