Dispirited locals in northern Portugal on Thursday were taking stock of the damage wreaked by powerful forest fires across large swathes of land earlier this week. The blazes, which sprang up in the Aveiro region over the weekend, fed by crushing heat and strong winds, have killed five people, four of them firefighters.
