For centuries, it has been commonplace for Scotch whisky distillers to rest their spirit in ex-sherry casks. In recent years, more and more American whiskey distillers have been adopting the practice of finishing their Bourbon in these sherry casks as well - after a healthy maturation in virgin charred white oak barrels, of course.
