Automatic writing is the psychic ability of allowing a person to produce written words without consciously writing. The words are given to the medium through the mediumship. They come either from the subconscious mind or directly from the spirit world.

HOW TO DO AUTOMATIC WRITING

Automatic messages from automatic writing come when the writer passively holds a pencil on a sheet of paper. This is similar to the use of the planchette that points to letters on the ouija board. In all instances a spirit control works through the unconscious of the medium to give a message from the spirit world. In the video, Craig describes some of the basics about how to do automatic writing.

Spiritualists believe that a spirit entity takes control of the hand of the medium to write messages, letters, and even complete books. Some say that this is simply the play of the subconscious whereas others claim the writtings come directly from spirits.

Automatic writing can happen in a trance when the medium is unaware of what is happening. In other instances it happens when the medium is simply distracted as the writing takes place. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in his book The New Revelation (1918), wrote that automatic writing occurs either by the writer's subconscious or by external spirits operating through the writer. This technique was also used by the Surrealist poet Robert Desnos.
