Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted on June 21 spewing a column of ash and gas six kilometres into the sky, according to the Associated Press.
Local news reported that there were two eruptions within 15 minutes of each other. Ash was said to have “blanketed several villages on the main island of Java”.
The Yogyakarta Research and Development Center for Geological Disaster Technology did not immediately raise the alert level above 2, which is the third-highest warning level.
Mount Merapi’s last major eruption in 2010 killed 353 people.
