A swathe of Warnings and Watches for Heavy Rain and Strong Winds cover the country as moist northerlies meet cold southeasterlies over the central South Island.
A Heavy Snow Warning has been issued for inland Otago and the Canterbury High Country, with 20-40cm of snow expected above 600m during Saturday.
Road Snowfall warnings are also in place for a number of State Highways in the South Island so anyone travelling on Saturday is advised to keep up to date with road conditions.
Sunday and (Labour Day) Monday are drier than Saturday but showers still linger, particularly about western parts.
Hawke's Bay still the place to be, with warmer temperatures persisting over the long weekend.
