LHAKHANG KARPO | HAA VALLEY CHELE LA PASS | BHUTAN
Until 2002, Haa Valley was closed to the outside world. Less than 10% of visitors to Bhutan make it to this picturesque valley. The strong-boned and resilient people of Haa inhabit the high valleys above 3000m. Typically, yak herders and farmers, cultivate high-altitude crops such as wheat, potatoes, barley, and millet. The drive from Paro to Haa passes through Chele La, the highest motorable road in Bhutan so be prepared for spectacular views.
This vast scenic valley covers an area of 1706 square kilometres and is in the southwestern region of Paro, Bhutan. It’s one of the smallest Dzongkhags in the country. This tiny region of the kingdom is full of tranquil mountain peaks, and pristine forests, and is one of the most beautiful places in Bhutan.
The Lhakhang Karpo is one of the 108 monasteries built by SongtsenGampo, a Tibetan King in the 7th century. According to a legend, a black and white pigeon was released to select sites to build the temples. These two temples stand as the guardian sentinels keeping watch at the south entrance of the valley. The white pigeon landed on the foothills of the three towering mountains worshipped as Rigsum Gonpo and is where the Lhakhang stands today. The temple was named Karpo (white) as it was built on the site where the white pigeon landed. This is the location of the Lhakhang Karpo or the White Temple. The temple’s architecture is the true depiction of Bhutanese art and culture, both on the outside and the inside. An intricately carved colossal door welcomes tourists with much grandeur to the temple.
