Police investigating the recent gang rape which killed a 23 year old woman in India, will today file a report seeking the death penalty for five of the six alleged perpetrators.
The five men are due to be charged with the woman's kidnap, gang rape and murder on a Delhi bus last month, at a fast track court which was convened last night. The sixth member of the gang will be spared trail for execution as he claims to be a minor. Police have ordered a bone marrow test to confirm his age.
The men themselves will not be at the trial today, due to worries over security. Speaking for the prosecution will be a male friend of the victim, who tried to fight off the attackers, and the doctor who carried out the post-mortem on the woman after she died in Singapore.
The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage across the country. On Wednesday thousands of women marched through Delhi protesting violence against women and calling for new anti-rape laws. Official figures say a woman is raped in Delhi every 14 hours, though campaigners say many more go unreported.
