Every piece is different, but this is generally the sandpaper grit I go off of for furniture

60-80 grit if sanding off layers of paint

100-150 sanding down wood (mainly to be more careful to not sand past veneer)

180 before staining so that the wood pores will close. It should also be used in the smoothing process when going from coarser grits to smoother grits.

220 light scuff sand before painting

400 between coats of paint
