Indian govt bestows Padma Shri on senior Nepali ophthalmologist Dr Ruit
Dr Ruit’s innovation in the 1980s led to a 90 per cent reduction in the cost of cataract eye surgery. He exports low-cost cataract surgery lenses to more than 30 countries, treats 2,500 patients every week, and waves off fees for those who cannot afford to pay for the treatment.
The Indian president also presented the awards to other citizens in recognition of their contribution in various fields of work including the arts, education, industry, literature, science, sports, medicine, social service and public affairs.
Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan. The Indian government also presents the awards to foreign nationals who have contributed to India in various ways.
