Here's exactly what you should do if you lose your passport traveling overseas. And, why making copies of your passport before you leave make things a lot easier.
The first thing to do is report it missing.
You can do that with the local police but the most important place to report it missing is to the US government
That helps prevent identity theft or somebody else using it.
But it's mostly important because you need that loss of passport documented when you go to get a new one.
The next step is to apply for a replacement passport.
You're gonna need to go to the US Embassy or consulate for help.
You will need another form of ID like your driver's license.
But this is where having copies of that passport will make things a lot easier.
Copies will show the embassy people everything they need to know to get your replacement password as fast as they can.
To make copies of it before leaving home, you can take pictures or scan it and store it in Google Drive where it's secure.
And finally, you'll need to pay for your replacement passport and wait for them to get it for you.
The Embassy will do their best to get it processed quickly so that you can get back home.
By the way, if you have travel insurance that will pay for those replacement costs for your passport, and also help arrange services.
