Is breastfeeding after breast implants possible? Are you considering breast surgery, breast augmentation or breast implants? While as a Lactation Consultant I want to mention that I have seen many women's milk supply impacted by breast surgery and implants. It is true that if the plastic surgeon is able to perform the surgery without impacting the aveoli and ducts, most women are able to make milk, breast implants can certainly cause a parent to have a low milk supply. The lactating parent may be at higher risk for breast engorgement when there is an implant in their breast and this can lead to poor emptying of the breast and tends to lead to lower supply in many cases. Some breast pumping with a breast pump may be needed early on to help increase milk supply and help from a lactation consultant is a good idea. That being said, if you have already had a surgery done, I encourage you to breastfeed after augmentation surgery, as some breastmilk is always better than no breastmilk. I wish more surgeons were more informed about human lactation and would find out about how important breastfeeding is to their patient and would be upfront about the possible impact on lactation and breastmilk supply. It is definitely possible to make milk and breastfeed with implants, if exclusive breastfeeding is important to you and you haven't already had surgery, I would encourage you to wait to have surgery until you are done having babies.
