The family of Breonna Taylor and their attorney Benjamin Crump held a news conference in Louisville, Ky. on Friday, where Crump said they were “devastated” and “outraged” by the grand jury decision not to charge police officers directly with her death, and called for court transcripts to be released “so we can know if there was anybody giving a voice to Breonna Taylor.”
Taylor was accidentally killed by police in her home during a drug raid gone wrong in March.
Bianca Austin, her aunt, also read an emotional letter on behalf of Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, which said she was “reassured” following the decision “of why I have no faith in the legal system, in the police, in the law, that are not made to protect Black and Brown people.”
The grand jury decision, announced by Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron on Wednesday, was immediately denounced by civil rights advocates as the latest miscarriage of justice in a U.S. law enforcement system corrupted by racial inequity.
Cameron said there was “no conclusive” evidence that any of the 10 shots fired by former Detective Brett Hankison, the officer indicted on wanton endangerment charges for firing into neighbouring homes, ever struck Taylor.
Taylor, a 26-year-old Louisville emergency medical worker studying to become a nurse, was shot several times in her hallway after three plainclothes detectives busted down the door of her apartment after midnight on March 13. The officers entered the home as part of an investigation into her ex-boyfriend who lived across town. No drugs were found at Taylor’s home.
