STORYLINE:
For generations, it has been the tradition for tourists visiting the Great Wall of China to carve their declarations of love into the ancient bricks. On Tuesday, to stop "love" graffiti, the Chinese authorities in Beijing have launched the "love wall".
Chinese lovers on Tuesday carved their names and declarations of love into a "love wall" to celebrate Valentine's Day.
Officials said that the Great Wall is being seriously threatened by graffiti, after many people want to leave a permanent mark on the thousand-year-old bricks.
One section of the Great Wall Juyongguan, near Beijing now has installed a fake "wall", on the foothills of the Great Wall, so that visitors can have their names and love oaths carved this wall instead of damaging the genuine wall.
The spokesperson for the Beijing Juyongguan Great Wall, Chu Ran said they built the wall to give people a place to express their emotions - and to protect the real bricks and mortar.
In the modern day, free-market China, declarations of love aren't free. For $124 US dollars, visitors can have their names and oaths carved on a single brick on the marble "love wall" at the foot of the Great Wall.
There are 9,999 bricks available, and according to the management nearly one thousand have already been reserved.
Zheng Xieyong and Chen Jing have been married for one year and they are the first couple to get their names carved on the wall.
They said they hope their love can have the longitude and strength of the Great Wall. They hoped that in the future their children and grandchildren can come and see the evidence of their love.
