Got it figured out. I had update the firmware of the controller through DJI Assistant.

Tad of a bummer but you can use a PSP remote if you're using it to control your tello drone.
Remote Controller 2 not working in liftoff, here is the fix.
Level mode = Angle mode = beginner mode.
You want to be in level mode in liftoff with learning to fly in manual mode. Then just change flight modes as needed.
