With changing demographics and demand, many rural rail stations in Japan saw a decline in ridership. This was unfortunately true for the Kyu-Shirataki and it had plans to shut down.
However, after learning about a high school girl’s use of the train to get to school each day they remained open.
The station had few train stops each day that it kept operational to serve the girl's school needs.
