Rooney, who was only 20 years old at the time, was closely marked by Ricardo Carvalho and Petit while controlling the ball in the midfield area.
Rooney tried to evade Petit and control the ball but found it difficult to escape Carvalho's grasp. As he turned to face the ball, Rooney's left foot accidentally hit Carvalho's groin.
Carvalho groaned in pain, and Petit protested to the referee. Then Ronaldo came over and provoked the situation, believing it was a dangerous foul.
